Synonyms: Blood Urea Nitrogen; BUN

NOTICE: This test is a component of the Comprehensive Metabolic panel or Kidney(function) Panel which may be more economic than ording this test alone.

Why It Is Done

Determine whether your kidneys are functioning normally. Determine whether your kidney disease is getting worse. Monitor treatment of your kidney disease. Determine whether severe dehydration is present. Liver disease or damage can decrease your BUN level

Test Overview:

A blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test measures the amount of nitrogen in your blood that comes from the waste product urea. Urea is formed when protein is broken down in your body. It is produced in the liver and eliminated from your body in urine.

A BUN test is done to estimate how well your kidneys are functioning. If your kidneys are not able to remove urea from the blood normally, your BUN level increases.

How To Prepare:

If possible, avoid eating a diet high in meat or other protein before having a blood urea nitrogen (BUN) test.
