Synonyms: Antithyroglobulin Ab; Antithyroglobulin Antibody; Thyroglobulin Antibody

Why It Is Done

Used to diagnose and monitor autoimmune thyroid diseases and to monitor treatment of some types of thyroid cancer and to detect recurrence.

Test Overview

There are several antibodies to various thyroid gland components. Antithyroglobulin occurs when thyroglobulin, which normally exists in the blood (as a thyroid hormone carrier) and in the thyroid, acts as an immune stimulating antigen. Autoantibodies are developed and react against the thyroglobulin in the thyroid cells. This leads to thyroid inflammation and destruction.
